Ways to use these pages

1

Three matching parts

Use one color on the cuff, heel and toe, then choose another for the stocking body.

2

Mantel color choices

Give each stocking over the fireplace a different main color and compare the completed row.

3

Add a cuff surprise

Draw a small gift beside a filled stocking and explain who it might be for.

Choose between broad shapes and small patterns

The smiling stocking has hearts across its body and large stars around it. The snowman-face sock also leaves broad areas in its middle. Both still have a few narrow decorative bands, so children can complete the large shapes first and leave those for later. The ornate heart stocking is quite different: curved panels, loops and tiny patterns fill almost every part. The paired geometric stockings and the diamond gift stocking have similarly small repeated spaces. Those pages reward a slower pace with a sharp pencil and a limited set of colors.

See what comes above the cuff

Several stockings hold wrapped presents, candy canes or greenery. The sleepy kitten wears a scarf and rests against a striped candy cane, while the pet pair looks over a plain cuff together. Ask children to choose one surprise they would add to the stocking and draw it in a blank corner. On the greenery page, the words Merry Christmas are part of the design, so a pale fill keeps the lettering readable. Children who want a whole page of peppermint stripes can choose the candy cane pictures next.

Hang a row of different colors

One fireplace page has a long row of small plain stockings; another has four larger socks with different patterns. Let each child choose a cuff color and repeat it on the heel or toe. A group can color separate copies of the mantel scene, then compare how the same shapes look with different palettes. Single stockings also make a flat paper display when cut around with adult help. The Christmas gallery offers other subjects for that display. Keep fine holly borders and tiny ornaments as optional finishing details when attention is running short.

Happy coloring!

Choose a stocking with spaces that match the child’s patience today, then plan colors for its cuff, heel and toe. Display the finished sock on paper or use a mantel scene to show several different patterns together for a Christmas coloring corner.
