Ways to use these pages

1

Name the expression

Choose a wink, star eyes and a toothy grin, then decide what each face seems to say.

2

Try a paper glow

Leave the carved eyes and mouth pale yellow against a darker pumpkin.

3

Make a paper porch

Line up several differently colored faces along a wall or windowsill.

Pick a face before picking a color

Ask a child to choose the happiest, sleepiest or most surprised pumpkin just by looking at its eyes and mouth. The repeated round pumpkin shape makes the expressions easy to compare. A classic triangle-eyed grin is a simple starting point; spiral eyes, tiny stars and leafy borders offer more small areas for someone who wants detail.

Make the carved shapes stand out

Color the pumpkin orange, red or an invented shade, then leave the eyes and mouth pale. For a lantern effect, put yellow in those face shapes and deepen the color right around them. This creates contrast on paper without needing a real light. A winking face or heart-eyed pumpkin can use the same method and still look completely different.

A quick expression game

Print two faces and cover each mouth with a scrap of paper. Does the eye shape alone change what the pumpkin seems to feel? Swap the covers to look at the mouths. After coloring, children can name the pumpkins and line them up as a paper porch display. The page with a fence already suggests a place to start; the plain ones leave room to draw a doorstep or night sky. If a group colors the same face, compare how its mood changes with each person's palette.

After coloring two faces, ask the child to sketch a third expression in the blank margin. A small change to the eyes or mouth can make a new character.

Questions

Are these plain pumpkins or carved jack-o'-lanterns?

They are carved-face designs. Eyes and mouths are the main feature; a few sheets also include a hat, leaves, fence or bat.

Which face is simplest to color?

Start with a large, plain-framed grin or smile. The leafy frames, tiny stars and spiral eyes have more small spaces.

Can I print every expression together?

Yes. Print all combines the {N} sheets, while the PDF button on each card downloads just that face.
