These 12 Letter A coloring pages pair a large A with something children can name, from a familiar apple to an astronaut in space. Most sheets also print the picture word below, so a child can find the letter twice before coloring. Start with the open apple, then pick an animal or vehicle that catches their eye.

Ways to use these pages

1

Point to both A shapes

Use the Aa and apple sheet to find the capital and lowercase shapes before adding color.

2

Name the picture first

Cover the printed word, name the object together, then reveal its A label.

3

Sort colored pictures

Place finished animals, food and vehicles in small groups and name each one again.

Begin with a familiar A word

The apple, ant and airplane make useful first choices because children can name them quickly. Point to the large outlined A, say the picture word aloud, and invite the child to find its first letter in the printed label. They can color the object before or after looking at the letter. The plain apple and big Aa page leave broad spaces for a first crayon; the ant and airplane have smaller parts for a child who wants more to do.

Explore the less familiar pictures

The alligator has teeth and body plates, while the astronaut floats among tiny stars. An ambulance has wheels and windows to spot; an axolotl has feathery gills and bubbles. Ask what each picture shows before reading the printed word. The acorn, apron and arrow add quieter, everyday objects to the mix. Notice how the A in apple and the A in acorn can sound different; there is no need to force every word into the same sound lesson.

Keep the letter in view after coloring

Put one finished page beside the child's books for the week and look for an A in story titles or food labels. The Aa and apple page is the only one here that places both letter cases together, making it a good page to revisit. A teacher can spread several finished pictures across a table and ask children to sort animals, food and things that move. Continue with the alphabet collection or choose Letter B coloring pages when they want another letter.

Choose an amount that fits today

One sheet can be enough for a short preschool activity. Try saying the word, tracing the big letter with a finger and coloring only the main object. An older child may enjoy the crosshatched acorn cap, the astronaut's small equipment or the friendly letter character's clothing and stars. Print the full book only when a child wants several subjects to revisit.

Happy coloring!

Choose the broad apple for a quick start or let a child pick the A picture they are most curious about. The full book keeps all twelve subjects together.
