Ways to use these pages
Start with your state
Find a state that matters to your family, color its outline and add one place you know inside it.
Pair neighboring shapes
Use a reference map to find two states that touch, then color both pages and compare their edges.
Make a travel booklet
Choose three states from a real or imagined trip and put the finished outlines in route order.
Start with a state that matters to you
Each page gives one state its own open outline and a clear name. A child might begin with the state where they live, where a relative lives, or where they hope to travel. Alabama has a short Gulf Coast edge; Florida stretches into a long peninsula; California follows the Pacific. The shapes are roomy enough to add a star for a familiar city, a road drawn in pencil, or a small memory inside the border. The Alaska and Hawaii sheets show separate mainland or island shapes rather than squeezing them into a tiny inset on one national map. These are coloring outlines, so use a current reference map when exact location or border detail matters.
Compare two shapes at a time
Put two pages side by side and ask what changes. Colorado and Wyoming look boxlike, while Michigan has two peninsulas and Texas has a panhandle and coast. Children can trace an edge with a finger before coloring it, then choose different colors for the two interiors. Try pairing neighboring states, or let a child pick shapes that simply look interesting. For a classroom display, write each child’s name on the back and arrange finished pages in alphabetical order. This makes a satisfying set without asking anyone to memorize all fifty states in one sitting.
Use the outlines for art and geography
These pages are blank enough for a child to invent a travel route, draw a landscape, or add a symbol they have checked with a grown-up. If the goal is geography, compare the outline with an authoritative map before adding cities, rivers or neighboring states. The map coloring pages offer imaginary treasure trails and town diagrams for storytelling. The Earth coloring pages move the conversation to our planet as a whole. This gallery gives one outline for each of the 50 states, from Alaska and Hawaii to the smaller northeastern states. Most maps leave a large open area for one or two colors; islands and intricate coastlines need more careful tracing. A child can mark a place they have visited or add the state name and capital with an adult. The outlines are coloring activities, so use an atlas when geographic precision matters.
Happy coloring!
