Ways to use these pages
Find the rings
Circle each ringed planet, then color the rings separately.
Earth first
Find the continents and oceans before coloring another world.
Space trip
Put two pages in order and tell where the rocket travels.
Start with the planet shape
A planet is a large round shape, but these drawings make the worlds easy to tell apart. Some have wide bands, one has a curved ring, and Earth has continent outlines. Before coloring, ask a child which marks they see. The broad planet areas can be filled quickly, while stars and spacecraft give a patient colorer extra parts to finish. Trace one planet ring before choosing the sphere’s color.
Notice rings, stripes and craters
The ringed planets are especially useful for pattern play. Color the ring separately from the sphere, or alternate two colors along a striped gas giant. A cratered moon nearby has different marks again. These drawings are imaginative, so a child can use invented colors; the labeled diagram offers an option for children who want to compare the picture with the names of real planets. Some poster pages are detailed; begin with a simple two-world page if time is short.
Compare Earth with other worlds
Earth appears several times, sometimes as the main subject and sometimes as a smaller neighbor. Its land shapes and oceans give children a familiar place to begin. A child can then decide how to color a world with rings or stripes. For more focus on the whole planetary family, the solar system collection is a natural next stop. The moon collection helps compare a moon with a planet.
Use the sheets for a space story
Rockets, astronauts, satellites and a telescope appear around the worlds. They turn a sheet into a question: where is the explorer going, and which planet will they see first? A child can put two finished pages in order and tell a short trip. The space pages offer more equipment and stars if the story continues. Invite children to name an imaginary world after coloring it.
Happy coloring!
Begin with one big world, then try a labeled diagram or astronaut scene for a longer space project.
